Ted Koppel says CNN’s would be nothing without Donald Trump, their ratings would be in the toilet
Journalist Ted Koppel mocked CNN’s Brian Stelter to his face recently saying CNN would be nothing without Donald Trump and their ratings would be in the toilet. Trump has repeatedly mocked the network. CNN reporter Jim Acosta has regularly been a whipping post for White House spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
While on stage at the National Press club the Network veteran Koppel was making the point that Trump is good for ratings as Republicans and Democrats tune in to view the unfolding dramas.
Stelter responded by asking, “That means what? If ratings are up, that means what?”
Ted Koppel – who anchored ABC News’ “Nightline” for 25 years and has been a working journalist for over four decades — quickly answered.
“The ratings are up, it means you can’t do without Donald Trump. You would be lost without Donald Trump,” Koppel said as Stelter shook his head in disagreement.
“Ted, you know that’s not true,” Stelter said.
“CNN’s ratings would be in the toilet without Donald Trump,” Koppel said as the audience laughed.
“You know that’s not true. You’re playing for laughs,” Stelter shot back before explaining it would be “Okay” if CNN lost significant viewership during the next administration.
“I reject the premise that these networks are making so much money off of Trump,” Stelter said.
Trump replied by referring to reporters as “you Democrats.”
“I consider you, the media, a part of the Democratic Party,” he said
Ted Koppel is correct CNN would probably be out of business if not for Donald Trump. Their ratings are down 23% since last year. Without Trump talking about them nobody would be. CNN founder Ted Turner even came out this past week and said they are spending too much time on politics and should have more balanced news.
