Teen who wore Chinese dress to prom gets blasted for cultural insensitivity
Keziah Daum found a beautiful traditional Chinese dress at a Salt Lake City vintage shop for prom. The 18-year-old had no idea the uproar she would cause on social media.
“One of the factors was the modest neckline ,”Daum told Today style, recalling why she fell in love with the dress,” “Also, how unique and absolutely gorgeous I was, it was really special.”
In our overly sensitive culture of course Daum’s beautiful Chinese dress triggered one jerk who blasted her on twitter. And one jerk being offended set off rockets on social medial.
Daum responded to the twitter criticism saying “I mean no disrespect to the Chinese culture, I’m simply showing my appreciation to their culture.”
Daum said she understands where her critics are coming from, she just doesn’t agree.
“Being aware and representing cultures is one of the biggest things when it comes to this, “she said.” My intention was never to be racist, provocative, or to show cultural appropriation. I was in fact showing my appreciation for the culture.”
Many people found nothing wrong with Daum’s dress. In fact one of her supporters was Asian according to the New York Times.
“It’s ridiculous to criticize this as cultural appropriation,”Zhou Yijun, a cultural commentator in Hong Kong, told the Times. “From the perspective of a Chinese person, if a foreign woman wears a qipao and thinks she looks pretty, then why shouldn’t she wear it.”
Daum says she received compliments when she wore the Chinese dress and if she had it to do over again she would wear it again.
Good for her standing up to one freaking triggered bully on Twitter. She is a beautiful young lady and looked beautiful in the dress. The only way to defeat political correctness is to stand up to these bullies and that is what they are and tell them to piss off.
